SLOW PLAY

Slow play steals much of the enjoyment we should get from a round of golf.  But, we all have difficulty perceiving our own faults which may contribute to slow play.  The league has established the following rules with regard to slow play.

Ÿ
If a match falls one full hole behind the group ahead of them, they SHOULD allow a closely following match group to play through.

Ÿ
If a match falls one and a half holes behind the group ahead of them, they MUST allow a closely following match group to play through.  If they do not, the following group may inform the league committee.  In that event, the match being played by the slow group may be forfeited by both teams in that match.

Ÿ
The player with the lowest handicap in each foursome is responsible for reminding the others in his group to maintain a reasonable pace of play.  This includes playing ready golf and following the league pickup rule.

TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY
Ÿ
Walk ahead safely to your ball.
Ÿ
Be thinking about your shot and select your club before it is your turn to hit.
Ÿ
Don’t practice your swing unnecessarily.
Ÿ
Play ready golf.  If a member of your group is delayed, go ahead and hit as long as you can do so safely.
Ÿ
When you hit one out of the fairway, line up your ball with objects in the area where it went so that it’s easier to locate.
Ÿ
Don’t spend a lot of time looking for your ball.  The league rules allow players to search for a maximum of 2 minutes.
Ÿ
Carry a second ball in your pocket.
Ÿ
Line up your putts before it’s your turn to putt.
Ÿ
Don’t distract or delay others by idle chatter.
Ÿ
Be aware and courteous to those behind you.
Ÿ
Don’t give others lessons during a round (for more reasons than slow play).
Ÿ
Don’t retry putts.
Ÿ
Do your score-keeping on the next tee, not on the putting green.
Ÿ
Don’t hesitate to tell your partner or opponents to speed up their play.
